Winter haircare tips

Winter weather can cause your hair to frizz out, leaving you frazzled -- but don't let hair woes get you down. With these haircare tips and style tricks, you can tame your frizzy, fuzzy hair this winter.

Woman with winter curls

1Condition often.

You don't need to shampoo your hair every day , but you do need to keep your hair hydrated. Winter weather can zap the life and moisture out of your hair, causing breakage and frizzies. Use a moisturizing shampoo, going heavy on the ends, and use a weekly deep-conditioning treatment. Over-the-counter hot oil treatments work well, but you can also make a moisturizing hair mask at home.

Try these beauty recipes from the kitchen>>

2Get a professional treatment.

A formaldehyde-free Brazilian keratin treatment helps fight frizzies as it softens your hair's natural curl pattern. After this treatment, you'll notice that your hair is a lot less frizzy and a lot more shiny, even when it's air dried. Talk to your salon about the products used. You want natural keratin protein that restores and rebuilds your hair follicles, not harsh chemicals that can do more damage that good.

3Protect your hair.

When choosing hair products, look for thermal protectants that shield your hair from damage due to the sun, blow dryers and other heated styling tools. In an ideal world, we could skip styling tools altogether, but that's not realistic. That's why you need protection. John Fried, Folica, Tresemme and several other lines have specially formulated shampoos, conditioners, serums and sprays that protect hair from the heat and help prevent damage.

4Blot, don't rub.

When towel drying your hair, blot up excess water with a fluffy, soft towel; don't rub your head vigorously. Excessive, rough rubbing can encourage frizz. Don't leave your home with damp hair in the winter, either; cold temperatures can freeze hair, causing breakage, split ends and more frizzies.

5Choose the right hairstyle.

Finding the right hairstyle for frizzy hair can seem impossible, but several manageable options exist.

Get a good cut. Talk to your hairstylist to find the right hairstyle for you. Frizzy hair that is chin level or above can end up looking like that of a clown. Instead, consider a modified bob that is about shoulder length. When styling your hair, skip the hairbrush; instead, separate and define your curls with your fingers. Use a scrunching spray or leave-in conditioner. Dry your hair with your blow dryer's diffuser attachment. Rather than scrunching it, cup your hair while blow drying.

Braid it. Pull your hair into ponytail at the nape of your neck. Rub a little hair serum in the palm of your hand and run it through the ponytail, all the way to the ends. Braid your hair and secure with an elastic-free band. You can do this with a side ponytail, too, which is very trendy right now.

Don't fight your curls. Frizzy hair can get even frizzier if you're always trying to battle your curls. Instead, embrace and tame your curly locks. With the right styling products, you can have beautiful ringlets or loose waves rather than frizzed-out hair.

3 Romantic hairstyles for Valentine's Day

$

On the most romantic day of the year, your hairstyle should be elegant, feminine and romantic too. Here are three romantic hairstyles that are perfect for Valentine's Day.

Valentine's day hair ideas

1

Low bun

With a classic bun, your hair is straightened and then brushed back and pulled up. The hair is then rounded over and pinned into place with bobby pins to create the actual bun. Many buns are worn high on the head, but for a modern, romantic look, make your bun low toward the nape of the neck.

2Messy updo

Intead of tucking every hair into place in a sleek bun, you can pull your hair into a high updo and leave the style messy. This is a fabulous romantic look for curly hair. If your waves are a bit frizzy, use a curling iron to touch up the ends. Check out these other tips for creating a messy updo.

3Long and loose

For hair longer than shoulder length, an updo can be very heavy and difficult to manage. So don't be afraid to leave your hair down, particularly if it's curly or wavy. If you want to add some waves to your straight hair, follow these hairstyle tips. You can also wear your hair half-up and half-down. This romantic hairstyle pulls the front portion of your hair up in a clip, leaving the back long.

The busy mom doesn't have the time to spend an hour in the mirror every morning getting ready, so a low-maintenance style is a must. With these hairstyles, you'll look fabulous without the fuss.

    Mom with bob haircut

    Celeb mom hair

    1Pixie cut

Short hair is trendy right now. If you dare, go super short with a pixie cut. Though you'll have to get this hairstyle trimmed more often, the everyday maintenance is almost nil. Get textured layers on top, so you can wear it messy and love it.

    2Side braid

If you have long hair and want to keep it that way, try a braid instead of the usual ponytail. Make a low ponytail on one side of your neck and then braid it. Fortunately, this style doesn't have to be perfect to look good.

Check out Catt Sadler's sideswept braid hairstyle. >>

    3Bob

The bob requires very little maintenance, making it perfect for moms. Instead of an ultra short, highly stacked bob, consider a swingy bob that is chin length or slightly longer. Both blunt and sideswept bangs work well with a bob.

    4Loose waves

For hippie-chic moms, you can't go wrong with long hair in loose waves. If you weren't blessed with natural waves, don't worry. Shower in the evening and braid your hair when it's damp. Sleep in the braids overnight. When you take them out in the morning, you'll have beautiful waves. The smaller and tighter the braids, the tighter the waves will be. To avoid getting frizzed out, put a little hair serum in your hand and run it over the braids before you sleep.

Bring it Home Beauty offers professional hair and nail care right at home via their DVD set, $18. We caught up with their hair care experts who shared these helpful hair tips:

    1. Bring it Home Beauty DVD with hair tipsWhen you are cutting hair never use household, kitchen or sewing scissors, as they will bend the hair over rather then cut it where you need it. Hair cutting shears are sharper and cut hair more accurately. You'll be happier while you cut and with the results!
    2. Begin your haircut by creating a guide. The guide is an established length that your will be cutting from to assure an even haircut.
    3. If you color your roots on a regular basis, don't color all of your hair every time you do your roots. Having healthy hair always comes first.
    4. When blow-drying a section, always blow down the hair shaft. Never blow-dry up the hair toward the roots, as this may cause the hair to frizz and you won't get that smooth look.
    5. Thermal active spray is a heat-activated protectant that seals and protects hair from the heat of the curling iron.

How to get Nicki Minaj's 2011 MTV Movie Awards hairstyle

Nicki Minaj is ever the hairstyle chameleon -- and some of her looks are more freaky than fashionable. But at the 2011 MTV Movie Awards, she wore a sleek and shiny bob with blunt bangs that looked pretty normal and downright sophisticated . To recreate her sleek bob, follow these easy steps.

    Nicki Minaj

    Step 1

After showering, apply a hair serum designed to smooth hair and make it shiny, like Nicki's.

    Step 2

Blow-dry hair with a medium barrel round brush, drying the hair straight out from the scalp. Once you reach the ends, roll the brush under and apply the blow dryer at an angle to accentuate the rounded edge.

    Step 3

Blow-dry bangs straight down, and as you did with the rest of your hair, blow dry the ends of your bangs around the round brush to create the rounded under effect.

    Step 4

Smooth any flyaways, and spray with medium hold hairspray.

Evan Rachel Wood stepped out on the red carpet with a newly-cropped style. Does it fit her?

    Evan Rachel Wood short hair

Whoa! We totally didn't recognize True Blood star Rachel Evan Wood until we read the photo caption. The actress -- and former fiancee of shock rocker Marilyn Manson -- showed up to the sexy show's season four premiere with a new pixie hair and a sexy menswear outfit.

Looks like someone's going for the androgynous look!

Wood's new look might have something to do with the revelation that she considers herself bisexual.

"I'm up for anything," Wood, 23, told Esquire last month. "Meet a nice guy, meet a nice girl..."

She even likes to act more like a guy than a girl.

"I'm more of like the guy when it comes to girls. I'm the dominant one. ... I'm opening doors, I'm buying dinner. Yeah, I'm romantic,"Wood told the men's magazine.

But maybe her look is just another in the style evolution of the actress: She's sported red, blond and strawberry blond strands over the past several months -- but this is the first time she made such a drastic change in length.

    Get Evan Rachel Wood's look

Loving Wood's pixie 'do? It's actually really easy to get on your own, according to her stylist, Mara Roszak.

Apply Volumactive spray to the roots on wet hair.

Blow dry in several directions off the face.

Rub a dime-sized amount of hard wax in your hands and spread it through your hair with your fingers from the back to the front.

Flatten the sides of your hair and tousle the top, adding wax as needed.

Twist random sections and spray with Rene Furterer hairspray.

Whether you already have short hair or are thinking about taking the plunge, Vanessa Hudgens' new short 'do is the perfect style inspiration. In a few easy steps, this relaxed look can be yours too.

The new face of Candie's, Vanessa Hudgens, showed off her new pixie look at the premiere of Captain America: The First Avenger in Hollywood, looking casual and confident with her new short hair.

According to US Weekly, she chopped off her long locks for a role in her upcoming movie Gimme Shelter where she plays a homeless, pregnant teen. Whatever the reason for the shorter style, we think it looks fabulous! Distinguish yourself from all the long-haired ladies out there by copying Hudgens' cute crop with these easy steps.

    1Shampoo

Get her healthy looking sheen by starting with the right shampoo. TRESemme Smooth and Silky shampoo is a good inexpensive option that works on all hair types. Lather up for a silky foundation.

    2Dry

Towel dry hair until damp and bust out that hairdryer. Dry hair upside down to get the extra body this style needs. Use a brush to get tangles out, but then switch to using your fingers to get a messier look.

    3Flip

Flip hair back up and use a round brush to blow dry the crown away from your face. Pull hair back and use the brush to curl it slightly under towards your scalp.

    4Curl

Using a 1-inch curling iron, add extra body and wave to random sections around the head. This look is all about imperfection, so don't worry about creating perfect curls or getting every piece just right. Let you hair do its own thing!

    5Wax

Finish off Hudgens' short style by rubbing a little hair styling wax through your fingers and piecing it up. We think Garnier Fructis Style Surf Hair Texture Paste is easy to work with. Shape your hair with the wax to get those great swoops and turned out ends.

    Tips for coloring short hair

If you’ve got a short, sassy 'do, you want an equally posh color job to complement your style. Follow these guidelines provided by an expert colorist to get a salon quality color application guaranteed to make your short haircut pop.

tips for dying short hair at home

Kadi Lee, a professional colorist at Serge Normant at John Frieda Los Angeles, has colored the shorter locks of top celebs. She suggests going for a highlighting look when you have short hair. In this two-step process, the key is to focus on the ends of the hair first, to avoid the "spottiness" that can occur when coloring short locks. Here's how to get the look celebs pay top dollar for:

    The Prep

To get started,  you'll need a fine tooth comb and long "duckbill clips." Start by dividing the hair into three sections: down the center, and from ear to ear. . With the long clips, divide hair into three narrow sections on each side. The compartments will help to ensure that you are applying color only where you want it, and to avoid any splotchy appearance. Once you've created your "compartments," spray the root of the hair with hair spray -- and then tease it into a compact form. Lee warns not to skip this important step which "will prevent color from bleeding and will make a nice blended line."

    Phase One

Once you've prepped your sections, apply the color mixture with a highlighting or application brush. Scatter onto the hair using nice, even strokes. Remember -- because you are highlighting, the focus of your application is on the ends of hair in this step. Lee shares that one way to keep application mess-free is to place cotton in between the sections you've created. .

Once you've applied the color, set the remaining mixture aside and process the hair color for the time stated in the directions. After you've removed the clips, rinse the color out of your hair until the water runs clear. Dry your hair thoroughly.

    Phase Two

Dip your comb into the remaining hair color mixture you set aside earlier. Along your part and hairline -- which is now dry -- neatly comb the mixture into the "line of demarcation" only. Let the color process again for the amount of time specified in the directions. Once the "time is up," rinse the color out again, and style as usual.

The end result will produce a naturally highlighted look for short hair, with color appearing more natural at the root and lighter at the ends -- instead of a matte all-over effect, which can be "heavy" looking on short hair. Lee says that while it is possible to do this application alone, it will be easier if you can enlist a friend to help!

    Expert tip

Mimi DeKasha of Chicago's George the salon:"One of my favorite things to do in sleeker bob type styles, is to pull 'peek a boo highlights' from underneath. This gives just enough pop to a shorter cut, while still keeping the look sophisticated."

Do you have long, short or curly hair? Celebrity hairstylist and author Rochelle Mosley gives her hair tips on how to look drop dead gorgeous this holiday season.

Whether she's styling Serena Williams' hair at her Harlem-based Salon 804 or promoting her book How To Do Your Hair At Home, Rochelle Mosley is a true hairstyling force that lives and breathes beauty.

The recipient of The Oprah Winfrey Show's Golden Scissors Award sat down with us to discuss what hairstyle to rock at holiday parties this season.

Long curly or long straight hair

"A Princess Leia bun is a super cute style to rock for the holidays because all you need to do is part your hair down the middle, secure each section with a rubber band, twist each side up and pin up on both sides with bobby pins," she says. "Instead of two, you can pull your hair to the side and have one side bun."

If you're looking to keep your hair down, Mosley recommends the following: "For long hair, pull it to a side ponytail and accessorize with your favorite clip."

Tip:We suggest pairing this style with a strapless dress and a dangling earring for that Hollywood glamour look.

Short curly or short straight hair

"If you have shoulder length hair, wear your hair half up by parting your hair down the middle," Mosley says. "Grab one to two inches of hair in the front of your head on both sides and twist backwards by pinning on both sides."

Tip:Try Barry Fletcher's Lasting Desire Holding Spray and add a fun rhinestone clip to secure the hair.

    The bob

"Funk a straight-hair bob up with a cute colorful clip-on hair piece," she says. "Clip on your bangs to really make a statement or clip right behind the hair."

Tip:If you're not quite ready to rock the colored hair piece, try these colored feathers for that edgy rocker holiday look.

No matter your hair type, you will be sure to impress any boss, co-worker, friend or crush this holiday season with these easy hair styling tips. It's time to show off, ladies!

Thinking of trimming your tresses? This season is the time to do it since cropped cuts are shaping up to be a cold weather style trend worth trying. If you need a little extra inspiration, we put together three of the hottest short hairstyles to try this winter.

Katie Holmes -- Chin-length bobSomething classic: Chin-length bob

If you've been toying with the idea of shorter strands but don't want to take too much off, a chin-length bob is a great way to ease into a look with less length. Whether you go bold and boxy or tousled and textured, bobs are back in a big way this winter. A bob is always a classic cut and we've seen many variations over the years, but the chin-length style makes it easy to make a change that isn't too drastic. To keep your bob fresh and fun, the length should be at your chin and the structure kept blunt. We also suggest adding eye skimming blunt bangs for a more dramatic twist.

Styling tip: If you want to keep the style sleek, use a sculpting product before drying. For a more relaxed look, work a light hold styling cream into damp hair and finger dry.

Michelle Williams -- Cropped pixieSomething cute: Cropped pixie

While not for everyone, pretty pixie cuts are flirty and fun. We saw cute, ultra-cropped cuts grace several spring runways, showing us that when it comes to hair, the shorter the better this winter. So if you're feeling really adventurous this season, try a cropped pixie hairstyle and go short all over. Opt for something reminiscent of Twiggy's famous pixie cut from the '60s or Mia Farrow's look from the movie Rosemary's Baby. Or for more modern inspiration, look no further than Harry Potter alumni and burgeoning fashionista Emma Watson. Other celebrities who have tried out variations of the updated pixie include Ginnifer Goodwin and Michelle Williams.

Rihanna -- Asymmetrical cutSomething different: Asymmetrical cut

We've been particularly intrigued by this versatile and flattering cut, so why not change things up with your strands this winter by going asymmetrical? The on-trend cut sees the sides cut very short and the top section left long. Think Rihanna, a celebrity famous for this unique but sophisticated look. The length on the top can vary from shoulder length to just inches long, but the key is to ensure the sides are much shorter than the top. This is such a great shorter cut this season because the length on top gives you lots of versatility with styling without having to put too much work into the finished product. To maximize the style potential of this look, use a product that will help create texture and boost volume.

A short hair style is a tough look to pull off, unless you’re a celeb with a team of stylists. Lucky for you, we’ve got some expert hair tips for pulling off this hot, cheeky look and getting a celeb-inspired cut. Check it out!

Long hair is always in, but in 2012, short is the new long, explains Pirri Brothers, Piero and Luigi: "With starlets debuting new short tresses, this trend is bound to catch on — fast."

If you're nervous about making the cut and unsure of exactly how you can pull off a fab short hairstyle – you know, the normal people way— the Pirri brothers say there are a few things you need to take into consideration first: "You must take your personal style, face shape and hair texture into consideration and make it you."

Lucky for you, we're taking all the work out of two popular short 'dos, the demi-bob and the modern pixie! Happy styling, beauties!

    Katy Perry -- Demi bob

    Demi-bob

    What is it?

A demi-bob is a bob that falls anywhere between the mid-neck and shoulders and is one of this year's hottest trends.

    Who's wearing it?

Katy Perry, Shakira and Cameron Diaz have all recently sported the demi-bob!

    How to wear it?

To make the look work for you, the Pirri brothers recommend adjusting to your own personal style and preference. Here are a few tips!

    • If you have a defined jaw: Complement the look with a bob that hits right at the jawbone.
    • If you have a round face: Keep your bob closer to shoulder's length and avoid going too short.
    • If you have an oval face: Try added fringe and angles with your demi-bob.
    • If you have straight or slightly wavy hair: Spice things up with a cut like Katy Perry's in a fierce black or keep it sweet with strawberry blonde.
    • If you have coarse or curly hair: Tame your 'do with the right products, like Pirri Elements Nature's Breeze detangler & leave-in conditioner.

    Ashlee Simpson -- Modern Pixie

    Modern pixie 'do

    What is it?

Close to the head and edgy, the pixie is a minimalist look perfect for the gal who's pretty low-maintenance when it comes to her locks.

    Who's wearing it?

Emma Watson and Ashlee Simpson have recently turned heads for their short cuts, and, of course, Twiggy is the original pixie gal!

    How to wear it?

The pixie 'do is not for the faint of heart, ladies. But you can make the look work for your beauty type with a few key changes!

    • If you have a petite face and fine features: Adding bangs will help to further open up the face, the Pirri brothers say.
    • If you have an oval face: A lot of gals with oval faces think they can't rock this trend, but you certainly can! The Pirri brothers recommend asking your stylist to do a razor cut that complements your face shape, not one that elongates it.
    • If you have a round face shape: To help create a slimming effect, you might want to opt for a demi-bob instead of a pixie. Of course, you can still rock a pixie with the right professional help!
The most important part of rocking a pixie cut? The stylist! Choose a hairstylist you trust and ask them for simple daily hair styling tips to make your life easier!

    Short and sweet

Welcome to Celeb Hairstyle of the Week, where we'll share our fave celeb hair looks each Friday! Up this week? Miley Cyrus' new, mature cut!

It's no secret that Miley has been through her fair share of highs and lows -- professionally, personally and fashion-wise -- in the past few years. But it seems like the teen star is finally growing up -- at least style-wise. We recently raved about the singer/actress' People's Choice Awards dress and makeup and have noticed that Miss Miley has been making a true effort to clean up her look a bit.

Just this week, Miley stepped it up a notch and cut her famously long locks! The star tweeted about her "hurrrr cut" a few days ago, and told her fans: "I didn't do anything too crazy. But I did take 5 inches off!"

The short haircut is a bit of a change for the pop sensation, who's been sporting long, thick locks for several years, but Miley is certainly no stranger to hair switch-ups! The star has swapped between stick-straight locks during her Hannah Montana days to long, wavy locks of varying shades, and even some pretty dirty looking 'dos.

We're happy Miley went a bit shorter this time around because to be honest, her hair has been looking a bit ragged lately. Her new look is mature, age-appropriate and fun, and we're loving the nice sunny shade she's been sporting!

We're loving Miley's cute short haircut! How about you? Sound off in the comments! And check out other celebrity hairstyles!

3 Fun ways to style short hair

Short hair is in this winter. If the runways were any indication, a lot of length is about to be lost before the weather warms up. Whether you currently have a close-cropped cut or you’re planning on taking the plunge and going with shorter strands, we have some hair tips for how to style your ultra-trim tresses.

    Simple & chic

If you have fairly close-cropped hair, you can add interest to your look with a few simple changes. A pretty pixie cut usually means wash and go, but why not get a little more creative. Here's how.

    Get the look:

    • Use a small amount of volumizing spray all over to give hair some extra body and a few drops of argan or monoi oil for shine .
    • Blow dry everything from the crown forward with a round brush while keeping the ends straight and flat.
    • Finish by directing the hair to one side.

Michelle Williams -- Simple & chic

The result is a more textured, messy-chic look that doesn't sit quite as close to the head . Add some small metallic clips or a thin headband to further freshen things up.

Evan Rachel Woods -- Short hair

    Tousled & textured

Short hair need not be boring – especially this season. One of the best ways to keep things interesting and eye-catching is with texture on the top. It's also a versatile hairstyle for a variety of face shapes .

    Get the look:

    • Start by working some mousse through your hair, being sure to cover the entire head.
    • Then finger dry while lifting the roots at the top off the head, adding volume as you go.
    • Finish with some texturizing paste for definition and add a quick blast of heat from your blow dryer to ensure all-day hold.

The result is a freshened up look with texture and volume on top .

    Big & beautiful

For anyone with a choppy, chin-length bob, we suggest adding sex appeal and lots of extra volume.

    Get the look:

    • Use some volumizing spray on the roots and some smoothing serum on the length for shine and softness.
    • Start with the sides and, using a round brush without lifting the roots, blow dry the hair down and straight .
    • Once hair is almost dry, start to increase volume at the roots.
    • Blow the front forward then redirect it to one side and finish with a little hairspray on the brush for light hold.

Dianna Agron -- Big & beautiful

    Keep short strands in shape

Not all haircuts are created equal. While you might think shampoo and conditioner are all you need to keep your strands in shape, short hair has its own needs to consider. With that in mind, we put together four hair care tips for keeping more closely cropped locks looking lovely.

    Hair cutting toolsGet regular trims

The most important thing to remember when it comes to keeping short hair looking great is to maintain the shape. This means regular trips to see your hair stylist, even more so than if you had longer locks since one of the biggest challenges when it comes to shorter hair is the fact that it needs more maintenance. Short hairstyles need to be cut every four to five weeks to keep it looking its best.

    Develop a healthy hair routine

While you might think hair is hair no matter the length, shorter hair needs its own set of products. Use a custom blend of products that work specifically for short hair to maintain the style. Maintaining a good shampoo and conditioner routine is important because even though the hair is short, it still needs to be kept healthy and shiny. Shampoo and condition hair as usual, and we suggest using an argan oil-based styling product to keep hair soft, manageable and looking great. Also be sure to condition on a daily basis to keep hair from looking dry.

    Don't forget about your scalp

You might not realize it but your scalp should get the same attention you give the rest of your skin. Just like dead skin and pore-clogging debris can build up on your face, your scalp can get weighed down, too. Build-up on your scalp can mean flakes, dryness and irritation . Think about adding an exfoliating scalp treatment to your short hair care routine. These treatments are great, as they serve as a facial for the hair and stimulate the scalp.

    Avoid product overload

If you've been relying on an array of styling products to keep your strands in shape, it might be time to take a break or at least be choosier with what you use. Certain hair care products can do more harm than good in the long run. Don't overuse products like gels and pomades that can make hair look dull and greasy. It's also good to keep in mind that over-use of these popular short hair products can clog the hair cuticle and make hair lackluster, causing strands to look oily and lifeless.
